Simple home maintenance routines that can prevent the most common and costly problems in your home. Here are some of the things that should be on your inspection and maintenance list.
- Check roof for missing, loose or
damaged shingles.
- Clean gutters and downspouts
of debris and make sure they are securely fastened.
- Inspect soffits and fascia for damage and signs of birds or insects.
- Inspect exterior walls and foundations for signs of termites. Look for pencil-sized mud tubes, damaged wood, winged insects or shed wings.
- Check exterior walls for any signs of damage or rot.
- Check windows for cracks or condensation.
- Check exterior doors for proper seals.
- Check all caulking on exterior windows, doors and vents.
- Clean the exterior of the house with a mild cleaning solution and then rinse.
- Clean any exterior areas affected by mildew or mold.
- Have septic tanks and fields checked and pumped if necessary.
- Cut back trees and shrubs from the siding and roof of the house.
- Change filters on your HVAC unit every 30 days.
- Vacuum heating ducts, HVAC intake grate, registers and radiators.
- Have your HVAC system checked by qualified professionals for any signs of failure or necessary repair/maintenance.
- Clean faucet aerators and shower heads.
- Re-caulk and re-seal bathtub surrounds.
- Check all accessible plumbing for leaks.
- Inspect foundation walls and crawl spaces for moisture penetration.
- Service hot water heating systems.
- Clean or replace range hood filters.
- Test fire extinguishers and recharge if necessary.
- Change batteries in smoke detectors.
- Have chimneys and flues checked and cleaned as needed.
